Vintage Art Deco Stratford 14K White Gold Ladies Swiss Wrist Watch - Elgin Giant Case - Runs #c980
I am pleased to offer this superb Art Deco ladies wrist watch from the Stratford Watch Co., one of the brands created by the Langendorf Watch Co. of Switzerland. Langendorf was in business from circa 1873 to 1973 and was one of the largest producers of quality-made watches during the late 19th century.

This Stratford watch has 15 jewels and is cased in a fine 14k white gold case that was made by the Elgin Giant Watch Case Co. of Elgin, Illinois. The case has beautifully engraved details on the front and sides and a smooth gold back. The watch dial is round in shape with fantastic black geometric designs on each side and a laurel leaf design in the center. The watch hands are blue and the hour numbers are Arabic. The watch is complemented by a period-correct, silver Sternite link watch band with a fold-over safety closure that has a decidedly Deco design on the back. Much to my delight, the crown pulls out to set the time, the watch winds as it should and it keeps good time when compared to my contemporary Citizen watch. It's a marvelous Art Deco timepiece!

The watch measures about 7/8 inch by 7/8 inch in size. It is signed "Stratford W. Co." and marked "15 Jewels" and "Switzerland" on the movement inside of the case. The case is signed and hallmarked "Elgin Giant Watch Case Co 14K", is marked with a serial number of "380349" and is also marked "10 1/2" on the inside of the case. The watch band measured around with the watch included is about 7 inches long. It opens to approximately 9 inches to allow it to be passed over the hand. It is signed "Sternite" on the inside of the closure. The band is not gold and is possibly made of steel. The combined weight of the watch and the band is 18.3 grams.

This is a lovely Art Deco watch! The watch is in good, almost antique condition. It has been worn and loved and it has age appropriate wear and patina that you would expect to find in a watch of this age. There are some scratches to the crystal and an indentation to the back of the case. The dial has some discoloration, but nothing major. The most peculiar thing about this watch is that when the case is opened, the movement seems to stop. Once you close the case it, it ticks and runs. I'm not a watch expert, but I've never run across this before. I have set the time and wound the watch several times and it ran and kept time fairly well. However, due to its age, I cannot guarantee it will run without additional cleaning and servicing. It's a great piece for the vintage watch enthusiast on your list!

SIGNED:

WATCH CASE-ELGIN GIANT WATCH CASE CO., 14K AND 10 1/2 ON THE INSIDE OF THE CASE

SIZE: WATCH-APPROX 7/8 INCH LONG AND 7/8 INCH WIDE AND WATCH BAND-APPROX 7 INCHES MEASURED AROUND INCLUDING THE WATCH WHEN CLOSED AND APPROX 9 INCHES AROUND INCLUDING THE WATCH WHEN OPEN

CONDITION: GOOD, PRE-OWNED, VINTAGE CONDITION. NORMAL SURFACE SCRATCHES FROM PREVIOUS USE/WEAR/STORAGE. THERE ARE SOME INDENTATIONS TO THE BACK OF THE WATCH CASE AND A FEW SCRATCHES TO THE CRYSTAL. THE WATCH WAS WOUND, THE TIME WAS SET AND IT APPEARED TO KEEP GOOD TIME WHEN TESTED. DUE TO ITS AGE, CANNOT GUARANTEE IT WILL CONTINUE TO RUN WITHOUT CLEANING AND SERVICING. FOR SOME REASON, THE WATCH TICKS AND RUNS WHEN THE CASE IS CLOSED BUT STOPS WHEN THE CASE IS OPENED.
