Antique Edwardian 10K Yellow Gold Seed Pearl & Bells Bar Pin Brooch - 1.2 Grams #c806
Wonderful Edwardian bar pin brooches like this one are often referred to as lingerie or honeymoon pins. The brooch is constructed of fine 10K yellow gold and features an elongated oval shape. It has an openwork interior with a three-dimensional pair of bells in the center that hang at angles as if they are both being rung. Twisted gold wire ropes are attached to the tops of the bells and crisscross in the center of the piece before being tied off at the bottom of the brooch. The brooch closes with an old safety catch with a locking lever, a style that was in use from circa 1890s-1920s. The finish of the brooch is a matte satin gold. It's a superb little gem!

The brooch measures about 1/2 inch long, 1 1/8 inches wide and weighs 1.2 grams. It is stamped "10K" on the clasp. There is another mark on the back of the brooch, but I was unable to decipher it.

Jewelers of this era utilized lots of symbolism in their jewelry pieces, and the symbols held great meaning to the ladies who wore the pieces. Bells used in jewelry have been said to symbolize friendship, so this pretty piece may have been bestowed to a lady in hopes she would not forget a special friendship. The brooch is in very good antique condition and looks absolutely beautiful. The hinge of the pin is a little bent upwards, so the pin has to be pulled down somewhat to hook into the clasp. This doesn't detract from the beauty or functionality of the piece. It's an exquisite piece of history that can be worn, cherished and passed down to future generations.
