Antique Victorian 935 Silver Swiss Pocket Watch Case, British Import, Open Face, Double Back #c847
This wonderful pocket watch case is Swiss made and its marks indicate it was specifically made for import to Britain. It is comprised of 935 silver and has a clear beveled glass crystal. The style is open face with a double back. The inner back has two holes for accessing/winding the timepiece. The outer portion of the case reveals a gorgeous chased floral motif with a shield-shaped center that is blank for a monogram. The beautiful chased designs extend all the way around the case to the sides, so it looks magnificent when viewed from any angle. The piece is well signed and the marks date it to circa 1888. It's a fabulous piece for housing an antique pocket watch movement but could also be repurposed in myriad ways. It is absolutely extraordinary!

The watch case is approximately 2 3/8 inches long including the bow and 1 11/16 inches wide. The outside diameter of the case is approximately 42mm and it should hold a size 14s timepiece (all sizes are approximate, please consult measurement photos for details.) The case weighs 28.2 grams. The British Merchandise Marks Act of 1887 mandated that all imported precious metal watches be hallmarked. In response to this, on Dec. 24, 1887, the Swiss Federal council adopted a fineness of 935 silver and determined a set of specific marks be used on watches imported to Britain. This case is assayed and marked in accordance with the Swiss decree on both case backs, which includes:

1. An assay mark of 0.935 or higher inside a rectangle
2. One small bear symbol above two larger bear symbols
3. Two small bear symbols horizontally marked on the bow

There is also what appears to be a maker's mark of a letter "R" inside two stars on the bow and a serial number of 113181 on both case backs.

This is a superb silver watch case and a fine piece of history. It's the perfect piece to hold an antique timepiece in exceptional style. The beautiful case also lends itself to repurposing, for which I am sure the possibilities are endless! The watch case is in excellent condition with normal surface scratches and wear from over a century of use. There are some scratches to the crystal, but nothing that detracts from this gorgeous piece. It's a magnificent find!
