Antique Victorian Sterling Silver Pocket Watch Case, Alfred Bedford, Waltham, Birmingham 1898, Double Back #c556
This is a superb antique Victorian pocket watch case!

This is a British sterling silver pocket watch case that is signed by Alfred Bedford, who managed the Waltham Watch Co. in Holborn Circus, London in the late 1800's. It was most likely made to hold a Waltham watch. The case is a double back dome or open face Hunter style pocket watch case. It features an open front which I believe was designed so the glass crystal of the pocket watch protruded through the opening. It has a beautiful circular, scrolled design in the center of the back with a textured design over the rest of the surface. The sides of the case have a delightful ridged design, giving the piece visual interest when viewed from the sides. The case has an inner and outer hinged back. I believe this may have allowed access to back winding watches. The case includes it's crown and stem, the crown being a pumpkin style that appears to be brass. The piece is signed extremely well with British hallmarks. It's a great piece for completing the restoration of an antique watch or for repair or repurposing. It's an extraordinary piece!

The watch case is approximately 1 5/8 inches in diameter and 2 inches long including the stem. Given its diameter, the case would probably hold a size 10 pocket watch. The case weighs 20.4 grams. It is signed and hallmarked as follows:

1. Watch Case, Inside Back-Lion symbol for sterling silver, anchor symbol for Birmingham, lower case letter "y" for the year 1898, letters "A.B" for Alfred Bedford and a number "75" at the bottom

2. Watch Case, Inner Back-Letters "A.B" for Alfred Bedford, Lion symbol for sterling silver and lower case letter "y" for the year 1898.

3. Watch Crown Front-Lion symbol for sterling silver and lower case letter "y" for the year 1898.

4. Watch Crown Back-Letters "A.W" for Alfred Wigley of Birmingham.

This is a fine pocket watch case and a great piece of history! Being a piece from the Victorian time period and with its association to Waltham makes it quite collectible, It's absolutely perfect for the person who wants to restore an antique Waltham pocket watch with a correct period case. The beautiful case also lends itself to repurposing, for which I am sure the possibilities are endless! The watch case is in excellent condition with normal surface scratches and wear from over a century of use. It's a magnificent find!
