Victorian 15CT Yellow Gold, Onyx & Seed Pearl Brooch Pin, Mourning Pin, Ivy, Back Locket #c443
I'm pleased to offer this exquisite Victorian gold, onyx and pearl mourning brooch!

Black mourning jewelry such as this brooch came into fashion after the death of Queen Victoria's husband, Prince Albert, in 1861. The Queen mourned for a long period of time and this, along with other tragic events of the mid-Victorian period, influenced acceptable mourning periods, clothing and jewelry of the time.

This beautiful antique mourning brooch is comprised of very fine, 15CT yellow gold. The brooch features an elongated oval shape with a beautiful black onyx stone center. The stone is framed by a milgrain detailed bezel with a textured diagonal rope trim around its entire circumference. A beautiful gold ivy leaf sits in the center of the onyx stone and is accented with lovely white seed pearls. The back of the brooch is a locket with a removable gold-framed glass cover that can be used to store mementos, photos or the hair of a loved one. The glass cover still has it's original silk fabric attached to its underside. The brooch closes with an old style, C clasp closure and it has a removable gold safety chain. It's a superb antique gem!

The brooch measures about 1 11/16 inches long, 9/16 inch wide and weighs 8.3 grams. The safety chain measures approximately 2 3/4 inches in length. The brooch is faintly marked "15CT" under the pin, and it tested in the 15CT-16CT range on a Tri Electronics gold and silver tester.

This brooch is truly exceptional! It's a marvelous piece to add to a fine antique jewelry collection and would make an excellent gift. With its locket back, it lends itself to being used to store mementos or photos of loved ones. The brooch is in excellent antique condition. The only issue I could find at all with this fabulous piece is some darkening to the silk fabric on one end behind the glass of the locket. This is not seen when the brooch is worn and doesn't detract from its beauty in any way. It's a fantastic find!
