Vintage Art Deco Marquardt Brass Mesh Sliding Ball Pocket Watch Chain for Belt - Wheat Chains #c888g

Regular price $39.00
This wonderful watch chain from Marquardt is comprised of brass and what I believe to be bakelite (untested). From its design and hardware style, I am dating it to the 1930s. The chain is designed to slip onto a belt to hold a pocket watch, gloves or other items close at hand. It features a thick mesh top with two thick wheat chains beneath it. A fabulous slide with a brass encircled, green and yellow bakelite sphere or ball holds both of the chains, and can be adjusted as desired along the length of the chains. The chains can also be adjusted independently from one another through the slide. The ends of the chains have ornate end caps with a scissor-style clasp on one end and a loop on the other for adding additional items. It's such a unique piece!

The watch chain measures about 5 inches long, end to end, and the mesh top is approximately 1 1/2 inches long and 5/8 inch wide. The sliding ball with its outer ring is about 18mm in size. The chain weighs 15.3 grams. It is signed "Marquardt" on the outer ring of the ball slide.

This is such a distinctive chain and it's a great piece for the pocket watch enthusiast or vintage watch collector. I think it would look very cool holding an Art Deco bakelite watch on a belt. It could also be used on a purse strap to hold keys, gloves or myriad other items. The chain is in very good vintage condition with normal surface scratches from previous use. The brass shows a darkened patina from age, but I believe it could be polished up to a bright shine with brass cleaner if desired. As mentioned previously, the bakelite ball was not tested. It's a fabulous find!

SIGNED: MARQUARDT ON THE OUTER RING OF THE BALL SLIDE

SIZE: CHAIN MEASURES ABOUT 5 INCHES LONG END TO END AND THE MESH TOP IS APPROX 1 1/2 INCHES LONG AND 5/8 INCH WIDE

WEIGHT: 15.3 GRAMS

CONDITION: VERY GOOD, PRE-OWNED, ANTIQUE CONDITION. NORMAL SURFACE SCRATCHES FROM PREVIOUS USE/WEAR/STORAGE. THE BRASS SHOWS A DARKENED PATINA FROM AGE, BUT I BELIEVE IT COULD BE POLISHED UP TO A BRIGHT SHINE WITH BRASS CLEANER IF DESIRED. I BELIEVE THE BALL IS BAKELITE, BUT IT WAS NOT TESTED.
