Vintage Iguala Mexico Sterling Silver & Green Pointed Glass Screw Back Earrings - Eagle 2 - Mid-Century #d160

Regular price $70.00
This wonderful pair of earrings is comprised of fine sterling silver and green glass stones (often referred to as Mexican green onyx.) They are early handmade pieces from Iguala, Mexico, and were made circa the 1950s. The earrings have wonderful mid-century modern styling, with flat rectangular bases that hold large, oval, pointed green glass stones in the centers. The bezel-set stones protrude out from the bases, which gives the earrings a fantastic visual appeal when viewed from different angles. Silver bead details line both sides of the earrings and above and below the stones. The earrings close with screw back style closures. They are big, bold and quite striking!

The earrings measure about 1 1/8 inch long, 3/4 inch wide and weigh 12.6 grams. They are signed "Sterling Mexico" on the back of one earring and with a diamond-shaped mark of "Iguala 925" at the top and "Hecho En Mexico" at the bottom. The marks are just under the screw backs which partially obscures them, but I have seen this Iguala mark on other similar Mexican jewelry pieces and am confident it is correct. The artist's initials are most likely contained in the center of the mark, but they are completely obscured by the screw back. There is also an Eagle 2 mark at the bottom front of one of the earrings which I have also seen associated with Iguala jewelry.

These earrings are absolutely captivating! They would make a fine addition to a Mexican silver jewelry collection and a great gift for a collector. The earrings are in very good condition with normal surface scratches from previous use. One of the earrings has some minor waviness and some indentations to the flat base portion of the piece which can be seen in the photos, but it really doesn't detract from these beauties at all. Since they are handmade, they also exhibit variations in finish and construction that would not be seen in machine-made pieces. They are ready to wear or to gift!
