Vintage Mexico Sterling Silver & Abalone Flying Bird Screw Back Earrings - Pre-Eagle #d476

Regular price $29.00
These beautiful earrings are comprised of sterling silver and abalone shell. They are very early Mexican pieces and pre-date the Eagle mark system, indicating they were made prior to 1948. The earrings depict flying birds with their wings and tails outstretched. Their bodies are wonderful, multicolored abalone shell cabochons and their head, tail and wings are detailed in silver. They even have silver beads for their eyes. The earrings close with screw back closures. They are fabulous old Mexico creations!

The earrings measure about 15/16 inch long, 7/8 inch wide and weigh 6.4 grams. They are signed and hallmarked "Sterling Mexico" on the backs of both earrings. They are also marked "Alpaca" on the screw back. Alpaca silver was commonly used on the findings of Mexican silver earrings for cost effectiveness and added durability.

I love the bird in flight motif of these earrings! With their beautiful array of colors, they could be worn with just about anything. They could be easily dressed up or down, making them extremely versatile. They would make a great addition to a Mexican silver jewelry collection and a very nice gift! The earrings are in good vintage condition. They do have some dents to the silver and irregularities in construction that would not be found in machine-made pieces. Also, one screw back sits lower on one earring than on the other (photo #7). This doesn't affect their beauty and they are still quite wearable, however, I have discounted them for these issues.
